Summer Camp Weeks for Children Ages 13 - 17
This is the course
that can inspire careers in the medical / health fields.
Our students will enjoy an informative exploration of our anatomy, what
causes disease, and some aspects of what keeps us healthy. We tour the human
body for an overview of the major body systems, stopping frequently along the
way to delve more deeply into each system's individual parts. This is a
fact-filled tour of the human body for students in middle school and above. We
learn the names and functions of various organs. We examine the human body's
circulatory, digestive, immune, nervous, muscular, respiratory and skeletal
systems. How nature heals and how drugs and bad foods hurt are will be addressed
in our third day. In our final
sessions we will address general healthiness for teenagers.
Reproductive systems and morality/rules for sex-ed are NOT a component of
this course.
Get a leg up on
next year's most challenging course! Get ready to deal with a difficult teacher
with "academic armor". Each course is taught by a proficient college or graduate
student so as to ease students in to a rigorous year-long course. Each of these
six courses gives a 15 hour survey of the harder topics that appear in most
students' coursework and on the AP Test itself. Each course uses on common
textbook, but makes use of the computer to apply and store information. Each
course includes materials for the AP test itself.
This is a course
for teens who want to be credentialed as caregivers. Build care-giving skills
that make you valuable to your family and neighbors for life. Adult caregivers
instruct students on individual care and group supervision. The credentialing
will allow all graduates to be listed for employment with at least one agency,
College Nannies (with offices in 30 metropolitan areas), upon turning 17. The
First Aid component is a two-morning module
conducted by a Red Cross representative.
This course is
dedicated to enhancing teens' appreciation for some classics, and to building
their vocabulary along the way. The century-old novels often assigned to
students force them to grapple with difficult English to even understand the
plot. We make use of annotated novels and short stories.
Students can choose from among five
classic novels, one of which might be assigned reading in the coming year:
Tale of Two Cities,
Heart of Darkness,
Utopia,
Flatland
and
The Awakening.
Students will also
be exposed to short stories of Edgar Allan Poe.
All along, tough vocabulary when encountered gets absorbed and drilled at
the end of each class using a computer program called "Quizlet".
Tame that dreaded
college essay! Our time together
will help each student brainstorm topics, craft appealing paragraphs, edit
effectively and build an accompanying college resume.
For students who have already started on their college essays, our
instructors give individual time to help them hone these essays and construct
the supplemental essays colleges seek. Our
workshop includes 2 hours of individual teacher time with each student and
students will have additional access to the tutor into the fall application
season. One free hour applies for
all students and parents may pay for additional time by contacting Ivy Bound.
Join us for this
introduction to the gadgetry that powers our household devices. In our fifteen
hours we will be making devices, at first collaboratively, then individually.
Every participant will build a robot that will clean anyone's bedroom on
command. We use the LEGO Mindstorms RCX Robotics Invention System. Learn
mechanical design, construction, programming & teamwork skills. In pairs, using
LEGO building elements, motors & sensors students build different robots &
program them with a computer to move, react & make sounds to solve challenges.
Ecology is the
cornerstone of the Life Sciences. It provides the link between the different
branches of Life Sciences, structuring them as a complete concept of life.
Ecology studies the relationship between living beings, be it animal, plants or
microorganisms, and with their environment. How we interact, benefit or compete
with each other, how we evolve together, how the environment presents
opportunities for change, and how living beings alter the environment to provide
for their own needs. The lessons in
the course include:
Comparative anatomy, how animals fit in ecosystems, animals in the human
community, parasites, etc.
Physiology,
anatomy, classification and ecology of fungi; Location, the climate, the plant
and animal life related to different systems including Tundra, Marshes and
Rainforests.
Formation ecology
and importance of mountains including erosion, volcanoes, formation & types of
rivers, catchments, dams, deserts and their ecology, etc.
Shore lines, coral reefs, intermediate reefs, estuaries, sandy shores,
etc.
The Greenhouse Effect, the Ozone Layer, Poisons & Waste Materials
This course
examines the fundamentals of ecology (the study of the relationships between
organisms and their environment) with special emphasis on man's effect on the
environment. We start with a second level survey of soils, waters, plants,
animals, minerals, fossil fuels, and renewal energy resources. We discuss animal
versus plant based diets for humans (e.g., various cancers and their
relationship to excessive consumption of fats, protein, cholesterol, etc.,
pesticides, nitrates in our water).
We cover various types of air and water pollution. We will then continue with
the dynamics and control of populations including topics on birth control -
abortion,
For the budding
business-person. We learn by DOING.
In our 16 hours together, we literally take one, two or three business
ideas, find the human resources to help get them off the ground, and the
internet resources to do marketing and help with fulfillment.
Every student becomes an “officer” in the business we create.
(Adults become the consultants.)
Starting one’s own business, even if unsuccessful, is “the best thing for
a college application outside one’s transcript”, according to one consultant.
Working on a small business venture is “one of the best things for
self-confidence and self esteem that a parent can facilitate for a teenager”.
This can be the start to many businesses and many ventures.
Laptop computer required for all but the first session.
Become more
worldly! Though we can't travel to all these places, our slides, videos and
readings will allow students to explore natural and human features on each
continent beyond
Tuesday:
Wednesday: Europe
Thursday: Asia
Friday: Australia & Antarctica
Have you always
wanted to write your own songs, but don't know how to play an instrument? Do you
have a Mac and really want to know how Garage Band works?
Then this is the class for you! Garage
Band puts on complete recording studio in your Mac, making it easy to create
music. Each class gives participants
two jam-packed hours working with Garage Band, learning how to combine loops,
add drums and rhythm sections and use special effects to bring out that song you
hear in your head. Come away with a CD of your own compositions. Basic computer
skills are required for this class. Students
will have their own computers to work at their own respective speeds.
Reduce your fear of
speaking in public! Be prepared to
address convocation! In our 15 hours
we will work on making good introductions to speeches, getting listeners
attention, how to keep listeners engaged, and how to have them remember
important points. In the process we
attempt to turn fear into fun. Our
work will include four short speeches over five days.
By the end, every teen should be ready to take on a class speaking
engagement with confidence.
This is the section
most respected by college admission committees.
Our work will be evenly split between Sentence Completions,
For many students,
this is the "gnarly" section of the SAT.
Success here can pave the way for better college admissions and higher
scholarship awards. The course
teaches TO THE SAT. We are not
wasting time on "proofs" and extras that will not appear on the test.
The course presumes a semester each of Algebra I and Geometry. All
students will receive instruction from Ivy Bound/College Tutors, including
materials they will use in the fall. Ivy Bound allows all participants to
convene for full SAT (Practice Test) testing sessions in the fall: four sessions
on Sunday afternoons lead up to the October PSAT and November SAT
This is for
motivated students who want to work SMARTER!
Our goal is to save students time and help them excel in what their
teachers are asking of them, now and in the future, when academics tend to get
more rigorous.
Better note taking
Better test preparation
Researching more effectively
Speed reading introduction
Better memorization
Improved paper preparation
This course is the
best preparation for success in English.
We begin with a session of "Brain-power" to help with memorization.
Then, each session is a mix of raw vocabulary and words-in-context.
The Latin is an enhancement that shows students roots and word families.
It is not a course in speaking Latin, but is instead a launch-pad to
classroom proficiency and SAT success.
