Advanced vocabulary, roots, precise synonym distinctions, abstract analogy relationships, and efficient elimination when several choices look plausible.
Reading argument and tone
Passage structure, main claims, author attitude, tone, purpose, inference, and the answer most strongly supported by the text.
Writing with direction
A fast planning process, specific support, controlled organization, clear development, and time for a purposeful final review.
Section control and triage
Pacing checkpoints, question triage, skipping and returning, productive guessing, and preserving accuracy through longer timed work.
High-value error analysis
Students classify misses as content, interpretation, elimination, execution, or pacing problems and build the next practice around that diagnosis.

Every class builds toward accurate work at Upper Level pace. Students learn to distinguish a true content gap from a time trap, an interpretation error, or a tempting distractor—and to choose the next move deliberately.

Mark Greenstein teaches students to see how the Upper Level test is built
Mark has taught test preparation since 1987 and founded Ivy Bound in 2000. He lists the SSAT and ISEE among the tests he tutors—and the SSAT is his favorite K–12 course to teach.
Students learn directly from an instructor who can explain why the right answer works, why a distractor looks plausible, and when a faster method is more reliable under time.

Answers before you enroll
Who should take the Upper Level SSAT course?+
This course is for students in grades 8–11 preparing for the Upper Level SSAT. Students in grades 5–7 should use the separate Middle Level course.
When does the Upper Level class meet?+
Upper Level cohorts meet in person in Greenwich on six Mondays from 7:15–8:45 PM ET. Select the class-date range that precedes the student’s target SSAT.
How much instruction is included?+
Tuition is $475 per student and includes six 90-minute classes, for nine total instructional hours.
What subjects are covered?+
The course covers Upper Level quantitative, verbal, reading, and writing tasks, plus pacing, question triage, guessing, error analysis, and test-day planning.
Is official SSAT registration included?+
No. Course enrollment and official SSAT registration are separate. Families should register for the appropriate test administration through the official SSAT process.
